Good Old Fashioned Pancakes at Casa Donohue - July 11th, 2021
So this morning, we had pancakes, as usual, and we had bacon too. Today Klara observed that no one is talking about Covid anymore. At camp, she said, no one wears masks, there is no talk of social distancing, all of which was very much in everyone's mouth at the same camp last summer. I chimed in to explain, that because Vermont has a very large vaccination rate with almost 80% of adults vaccinated, it keeps everyone safe, even those unvaccinated, like kids, and so we can relax all the precautions of the past year. Only, I didn't say 'Vermont', instead, I said 'Ireland' 😂! A wave of chuckles passed around the table, and after I corrected myself and had finished my vaccination explanation, Klara drew a vivid picture of what she thought was the constant state of the inside of my brain: She waved her hands in the air, made some dance movements with her upper body, while sitting on her chair, and sang 'I want to go to Ireland! I want to go to Ireland!' We laughed.
I had been thinking about our trip to Europe in October just an hour before breakfast. I had checked on the current restrictions for entering Ireland to see whether our planned visit in October might be realistic. That's why Ireland was on my mind, but mind you, she is right, it doesn't take much ...
Matt chimed in, 'The picture I now have in my head, is of you sitting at a bus stop waiting for a bus, and at the top of the bus stop it says - Next stop Ireland.' I thought this was a very appropriate and fitting description! We laughed some more and Klara painted a picture in our heads of what the bus stop might say for some of her friends. Phoenix is waiting for - Next stop Bacon, or rather, she suggested, the bacon is waiting at the bus stop and the words at the top of the stop say - Next stop Phoenix's mouth! We were cracking up...
Klara visiting Mom at the bus stop. Cartoon from iStock.
At this point, Matt had picked up his phone and was pulling up various cartoon drawings on Google of people waiting at bus stops. There was one of an old lady waiting, Matt suggested a caption like: 'Mom, not giving up hope.' There was one of a lady approaching a stop where someone else was already sitting - 'This is Mom making a friend at the bus stop'. There was one of an older lady holding a notepad in front of the bus stop - 'This is Mom getting a job while waiting at the bus stop'. Then there was one of a young woman and an old lady at the stop - 'This is Klara visiting Mom at the bus stop'. One showed a woman walking along a road - 'This is Mom tired of waiting for the bus and she decided to walk'. And a few more...
It is hard to retell this story and get the same effect, you would have had to have been there to crack up as hard as we did. But I must say, it's not a bad analogy 😂! Good thing I am very patient, so I'll keep waiting and enjoying the adventures along the way. I know the metaphorical bus will come, it's just a matter of time.
And the pancakes and bacon were delicious! I can recommend this recipe and definitely suggest you use a griddle like the one in the picture above to make them, it's a breeze that way!
Guten Appetit and happy Sunday!
Card of the Blackrock Diving Tower at the Salthill Promenade in Galway.
A friend sent it to me for Christmas and I keep it on my desk.
I hear the tower has been getting a lot of use lately during the recent heatwave in Ireland.
